What seems to be missing from any analysis is the role The World Muslim League, an NGO established in 1962 by Saudi Arabia, Morocco and Pakistan to first and foremost crush the moderate strain within Sunni Islam, Sufism, and replace it with a Saudi tribal, literalist version of Islam, Salafism; and then, to combat Nasserism, Arab Socialism (Ba'ath), Communism -- and since 1979 -- Islamic Republicanism, which was Khomeini's anti-Monarchical, anti-Imperialist and anti-Salafi project in the form of the Shia Islamic Republic of Iran... which made the Saudi Royals so nervous that according to both Prof. Prashad and Chris Hedges, led to the Saudis' offer of a billion-dollars per month to Saddam if he were to attack Iran, which he did... but the Saudis didn't hold up their end of the deal, and this is possibly one of the reasons which led Saddam to attack Kuwait, in addition to allegations by Iraq that Kuwait was "side-drilling" and stealing Iraqi oil.
