I also had the displeasure of meeting this guy in 2002 at the height of the Iraqi sanctions. When I asked him what the AUA was doing about the UN sanctions on Iraq that had -according to the UN - resulted in the deaths of 600,000 Iraqi children under the age of 5 and approximately 27,000 Assyrian children he almost became hysterical.

Turning bright red he raised his voice and refused to believe any of the figures I quoted him and kept repeating that that was not true. It was then that Nicholas Aljeelo joined me in stating that these are in fact publicly stated UN estimates. Hermiz Shahen then came to his rescue and skillfully took over the question by shuffling him to the side and giving him what I guess may have been a valium and then producing what appeared to be a half-letter that the AUA had sent the US President asking for the sanctions not to target the innocent people of Iraq.

All it took was one honest question to send this guy into a spin.

I was not very impressed.
