This myth is perpetuated by looking at Europoean history in which Protestants and Catholics waged hundred year wars and slaughtered each other by the thousand. As a result of this European precedent they are unable to fathom that Islam actually lived peacefully not only within its own sects but with Christianity and Judaism as well.
Sure there may have been ocasional pogroms used by some leaders to gain popularity but the majority of the leaders believed in coexistence between all the religous sects and religions within the Middle East.
