The language we speak is not Akkadian, which was the language of the Assyrians, but Aramaic, which although spoken eventually by the Assyrians was not an Assyrian language..nothing about us is "Assyrian" except our claim...we are Christians of the MidEast who started calling ourselves Assyrians....before the Euros dug up our artifacts in the 19th century we knew nothing of Assyrians except what everyone else knew from the Hebrew bible....so, the harm is that we are dressing ourselves in borrowed clothing, pretending to be something we are not..and worst of all, make claims to land we say is ours....which is seditiopn and in time of war, treason...and we have paid heavily for this error....today there are fewer Christians in Iraq than ever before...and that is OUR doing...not the fault of Islam for Islam defended us and protected us and allowed us to worship Jesus in any hundred ways we chose...the only people who truly have persecuted Christians is other Christians....not Muslims. i agree with you saying the name Assyrian means people of the ancient assyrian empire from the bible. This word has first been used by intellectuals and research men in the middle of the nineteen century one of then is mister JM FIEY thoses universitaries had made research and concluded that the christians montainers are probably the descendant of the ancient Assyrians. i have not enough knowledge to prove that. what i think is that archeologie, customs, and physical details seems to show that the christians from hakkiary could have some roots as far cousins with thoses assyrians. The assyrians where not christians of course and they adorated maby differents gods. It was the same for the arabs in old times they were not muslims and they also adorated many gods too they became muslims with mahomet.. But nobody say that the muslims today are not the descendant of the arab civilisation. about the language of course we do not speak akadian the history shows that with times, invasions, people can change or be forced to change their language. as i khow the aramic language has been used time after time because it was more easy to learn than akkadian. in france the language today is french, but in old times people spoke the language from great invasion made by Goths, Visigots, Ostrogoths, who were people from north europe, and after people spoke latin . and now french. i think that christians in middle east today are calling themselves assyrians to preserve a common root between all their differents parts chaldean, nestorians jacobites syrian and even yesidis and why not kurds. but all that is really difficult to understand and to prove. about your grand father dr baba parhad are you sure he fought alongside with agah petros?. as i remember at that time 1917 baba parhad was in Russia with freidoum atouraya and was creating with him the Assyrian socialist party. but iam not completely sure. sincerely yours --------------------- |
