"I think the important thing to take away from this realization (that is, the realization you get when you read history books that are written by scholars such as Dr. John Joseph) is that while we may not be the "direct descendents" of the Chaldeans, or the Assyrians, that doesn't make our culture any less valid or any less relevant! That doesn't make us any less of people to be honest with ourselves, in fact I think it makes us better off. Very few people in this world are "pure" in any sense of the word. It's not like the balloon has to be deflated. Yes, my entire family identifies as being Chaldean, and I enjoy our food, I have tried to learn our language, and I'm not good at the line dances but I do try at weddings. My point here is that the Iraqi people, Iranian people, Turkish people (we really are spread across several of these modern national borders, aren't we?) and our people have a lot to be proud of. Recognizing that doesn't make us tribalists. "Never stop asking questions." I like that phrase. Just keep asking questions!" -- Exactly what I was always saying, Jeffrey. This is a bad analogy, but I'll uses it anyway. Assyrians remind me of my Black friends who wear weaves, use lightning cremes and attempt to use whatever means to shift from who they really are (as Blacks) to whom they wish to be: WHITE, or as Franz Fanon coined it "Black Skins, White Masks." --------------------- |
