Maher is only seeing one aspect of the issue. I don't know how someone like him, with a Jewish mother and being from the East Coast, has so readily forgotten that when he was born (in the 1950s) most Jews were either considered Bolsheviks or Bankers by the W.A.S.P power elite and its minions it the press, somewhat like today's Muslim Arab, who's either a terrorist or an oily sheikh. Plus, no one is offering a nuanced analysis regarding the rise of fundamentalism in the region, and why the west supported the Muslim Brotherhood against a secular Egypt under Nasser, or their collusion with the right wing elements of Ba'ath to assassinate Qasim and undermine the Iraqi Communist Party, or their hand in removing Mossadegh five years before Qasim took power in Iraq, or their training and radicalizing of narctraffickers in Afghanistan against the Peoples Democratic Party of Afghanistan, the Afhghan Communist party, which was Stalinist and pro-USSR, but as far as women's rights and land reform, it was much more progressive than the Taliban and the hell on earth which is today's Afghanistan. The same is true with Iran. Brzezinski wanted a "god fearing" people in power and not atheists. So KGB defectors began giving lists of names of Iranian communists to the CIA, who sent the list to SAWAMA, the Iranian secret police which emerged out of the ashes of the SAVAK, and by 1988, most Iranian secular leftists were either dead, in prison, living in exile, or collaborating with the clerics. We shouldn't shut down people like Maher. We should instead talk about cause and effect. History.
