I came to LA in '85 from San Jose and the city was so violent that I think at the time it was the murder capital of US.. The Crips and Bloods gangs were murdering oneanother on a daily basis (as were Latino gangs and Asians). No one cared until the violence bled into Westwood, near where I now live, by UCLA, when a young Asian girl was killed. Then it was a "crisis" because it was no more a South Central, or East L.A. problem. No one then asked where and how did the gangs get the drugs and the automatic weapons. When San Jose Mercury's Gary Webb wrote the series of aritcles which became the book, "Dark Alliance", about the connection between the Iran/Contra Affair and a Nicaraguan, Danilo Blandon, who was arming the gangs and selling kilos of coke to "Freeway" Ricky Ross (who's doing time while Blandon is free living his life as a DEA informant), Webb was rebuked by all the major papers and journalists and he ended up dead from an alleged suicide. But the root of the problem was more than the Iran/Contra connection, it was years of instituional racism, corrupt and bigoted cops, the closing down of plants in which L.A.s African Americans worked and were able to live some sort of an upper working class life. Mike Davis does justice in his book about L.A., "City of Quartz", as does the film Crips and Bloods: Made in America, about how after the all the jobs left L.A. and all the activist groups got murdered, or framed and incarcerated, the only quick way to survive was to join the neighborhood gang. --------------------- |
