Great points, Marcello. Latin America is now vastly Evangelical, and while it's already occurred in a few countries, most of the region's nations will see Evangelicalism become the dominant religious view in the years to come, not too long down the road. This is because of the inherent left-wing view of Catholicism there through Liberation Theology. As you mentioned, Aristide was annihilated because of his work in synthesizing socialism and religion. Most Central Americans I know now are Evangelicals here in LA, and you can obviously attest to this through the experience you shared. Evangelicalism is just one way to draw people into the Republican fold. Asians were drawn into this fold because of their obsession with running small businesses. Latinos have been drawn by converting to Evangelicalism. With Assyrians, there was no real way to do this, so they ultimately decided to unleash a storm of agents to convert people, and they succeeded amazingly well, mostly because we Assyrians are shallow people (of course, not all of us). Now, with the refugees, they have gotten much smarter. Yet what tipped them off was Qasha George, who is of an indigenous faith from the Middle East that synthesizes Christian Orthodoxy with traditional folk religion, and is a true blue liberal Democrat. The last part especially bothered them. I have known Qasha George for years, and admire him. What is especially noble is his patriotism and his political view (a view that was uncommon before and is very rare now among Assyrians), and all Qasha George is doing is closing his eyes, not talking, and imagining none of this is happening, to avoid the final Cardinal Oscar Romero moment. Yet if he is gone, we are collectively doomed, especially the refugees. The Evangelicals overran 2 Protestant Churches, this is their last stop. Yet if they get this stop, they will turn our Nation, or 98% of it, into right wingers no less heartless than the Asians or the Evangelicals themselves. I accidentally ran into this conspiracy when I met a few Assyrians who had been converted from St. Mary’s to Evangelicalism and were proselytizing to me at a local CVS drugstore! The whole proselytizing began when they saw me speaking Assyrian on my cell phone! This was back in 2007, so they were the first group of converts. Almost everyday I curse the Evangelical redneck preacher who plotted this against our Assyrian people and is unleashing this nightmare on the flock at St. Mary’s. --------------------- |
