I personally have had limited contact with Qasha George in the last few years but the contact is still there, just quite less than before. He is very warm and friendly, cares much more about relationships and helping people out than being worldly and seeing himself as the boss which is something than plagues us as Assyrians (especially our hierarchy in society), he listens well and always offers some advice. He was indeed a populist figure. The only reason he has become the most polarizing and controversial person, or the least likeable Assyrian figure in LA as some say, and perhaps this is somewhat true though not completely true. But what caused this? The local Assyrian cultural center we have is inherently run by ring wing individuals. These people were mad when Qasha George came to LA on Day 1. Furthermore, Qasha George turned the Church from a clerical setting to a pastoral one meant not to just practice religion but to offer a social scene, provide a variety of non-religious services, and help gather the people together, things that Assyrians desperately needed in LA. The cultural center was highly offended and felt their business, monetarily, was being ruined, and they somehow were the only people who should offer services or create a social scene. Furthermore, the Church became an open minded place for rich and poor, young and old, thin and fat, gay or straight, etc. The cultural center was mad because their right wing philosophy prevented them from opening the doors and someone gentler was doing this for the Assyrians. Of course another thing that has enraged them all along is Qasha George’s liberal political views, which he has more or less openly discussed. Thus, the cultural center, especially since 2002, has engaged in warfare hoping to overthrow Qasha George and install a right wing pro-cultural center Qasha. The result has the man’s reputation has become polarized, controversial, and divided amongst the Assyrians. Furthermore, with the silent blessing of the cultural center, the Evangelicals have also fought for a change in Qasha, before overtly, and after the refugees arrived, covertly. This is because Qasha George helped the refugees tremendously and they could not see why this man should be toppled. I myself am out of the loop and hear a lot from my cousins, I have been out since 2009. Before 2009, I also can say 95% of my activities in the Assyrian scene was funerals. I have not attended a funeral in a few years though. --------------------- |
