In the Talmud there is a thing called "lashan hara" (Evil tongue) which consists of anything from gossip to speaking negatively about a person or a group. And if it causes a person, or a people, shame and humiliation, or worse, physical damage, then it is considered breaking the law of God. This, of course, only applies to Jews who follow Jewish laws and tradition. I do wonder, though, where does criticsm of any religion cross over into "hate speech"? Does "hate speech" always have to be explicit? Personally, as a non-religious, free-thinking person, I love my freedom of speech; but, if I write extensively about a group of people's practices and imply that their ways are "uncivilized", and consequently, someone uses my point of view to demonize and attack the said group, can I be held responsible for inciting this act, since in my analysis of the this group, I implied that their ways were counter to the modern Western way of life? --------------------- |
