There are a few good religious figures, like the late Archbishop Romero who promoted Liberation Theology in El Salvador and was assassinated by a U.S. trained gunman. Also, Father Dan Berrigan, who along with Howard Zinn, were the first Americans to go to North Vietnam and try to negotiate the release of two American pilots. Unfortunately, their efforts were sabotaged by the Nixon/Kissinger gang. Also, there's Father Bourgeoisie (I think that's how his name is spelled) who has for years been protesting against the School of Americas (the Harvard of third world dictators and torturers). But that's just a handful... And regarding rape and exploitation of Iraqis by U.S. and U.K. soldiers, shit, man, I was watching this documentary about "our troops" who blatantly and heartlessly said "I just pay one of these fuckin hajis five bucks to clean my toilet and take care of my chores" or "me and and another soldier broke into a mosque and drank beer and fucked all night... then we realized that there were empty beer cans and used condoms there that weren't ours... I guess we weren't the only ones on base to find our fuck sactuary". I highly recommend a film called "Sir no Sir" about the training of soldiers for the Vietnam war, and all the horrific acts commited by "our troops". Like the last line of "Apocalypse Now", I understand what was meant by Kurtz dying words: "The horror... the horror". --------------------- |
