...as for decent priests, I believe they would have been decent human beans had Jesus never lived. I think good people are good because of everything else besides religion. There's no evidence that would show me that religion has made a bad person good...or better. But there is plenty of evidence that a religious belief, and nothing else, can convince people they are doing God's work when engage in horrible acts, like murdering six million Jews because they killed God...that's a religious teaching and nothing else.

We know that no society could evolve in which murder and theft were not condemned, no need for a god to tell us that...but society can do quite well without believing it must torture people for the wrong religious beliefs...or for their sex life, or for "doubting" the word of god etc.
