G.O's notable work, "Homage to Catalonia", which I've not read and can't seem to find to buy and add to my little collection of books, is based on his personal experiences during the Spanish Civil War, when he, and other artists and writers, joined the International Brigades to help in the fight against Fascism -- although, there were other writers, like Ezra Pound, who were supporters of the Fascists (and later, Knut Hamsun "Hunger", who welcomed the Fascists and Nazis with open arms). In the 90s, the English political/social filmmaker, Ken Loach, used Orwell's "Homage.." for his film, LAND AND FREEDOM, a great little movie about the struggle of the POUM, a small band of Anarchist fighters who were - as historians have proved - caught between fighting the Spanish Fascists (armed by Hitler, Mussolini, American corporations, Western Democracies) and their so-called comrades, the Russian Communists, who not only disarmed the poorly armed POUM, but killed, raped and tortured many of them. These were the seeds of the second World War. I think in Spain, Orwell realised that the Capitalists and the Communinsts were both the same empire: the Fascist Empire... and how right he was, and is. Orwell, being Orwell, was of course part of the Anarchist POUM, although back in England, he was a card carrying Socialist. --------------------- |
