I know this is for pancho, but it's an open forum so I will jump in as well. First of all, you are making it seem as if professor Joseph is giving his own opinion, which can later be proven wrong or leave room for other opinions which may disagree. This is not an opinion. Secondly, why not accept the words of an Assyriologist? For the same reason we don't go to an Egyptiologist or any other "ist." We are dealing with modern christians of the middle east who have adopted the assyrian name recently. If we want to know about ancient Assyrians or Egyptians or Persians, we would go to experts of those fields and not an amateur. We are talking about an ancient people who lived more than 2500 years ago, and a group of Syriac speaking Christians who became assyrian not long ago. What were the Nestorians calling themselves before that? Well you tell us if you know. They weren't calling themselves Assyrians and we know that for a fact. There were no Assyrians even a century after the destruction of Nineveh and the other Assyrian cities, at least not as a people or an identity. Were there people with Assyrian blood, or some blood relations to them? Sure, but so were Amorites and others. You can never prove modern Christians to be directly related to ancient Assyrians because you don't have any ancients to test against, and the ancient Assyrians, who were not Christian, were mixed themselves. Already before the fall of Assyria, there were more foreigners(especially Arameans) in Nineveh than there were actual Assyrian, and this is stated by Assyriologists themselves. Then there was Aramization, the destruction of Assyria, the Persians, Babylonians, etc and there is no way in hell you can tell me that they didn't have a fatal effect. You can sit here and say you are Assyrian all you want but you have no proof. However, I can prove that your church adopted this name in 1976 and it was barely a 100 years ago when "Aturaye" began to be used. I can also prove that the Nestorians living around the area where the discovery took place knew nothing of the ancients and did not relate themselves to the ancients. So what were they calling themselves before they became Nestorians, and what were they? You tell me what they were. Where did Nestorians come from and what are they then? Could they be a mixture of people who happened to come together thanks to common church and the language of liturgy(Aramaic)? The Aramaic language was spoken and adopted by many people and including the ancient Assyrians, Babylonians, Jews, Persians, etc. That doesn't prove anything and neither does being born or having lived in an area. You have Nestorians today who are no different from the Kurds, Arabs, Turks, and others they have lived with so to tell me about genetics you will need to show something. You haven't proven anything nor given any sources, but ask questions which can easily be answered and have been answered many times. It is your opinion and part of your faith that you and all your Nestorian, Chaldean and Syrian Orthodox brethren are descendants of ancient Assyrians. This is not a fact nor can you prove it. That's why you want to talk about Assyriologists and other amateurs. Furthermore, you can't disprove John Joseph so you pretend as if he was stating his opinions in his book. If it were an opinion only, or something false, then his books would not be published by Brill, and he would have to go to the same places your friends go to, the same printing companies that "publish" books from KKK members about Judaism and you can even get your amateur porn film made by them. John Joseph doesn't pay to get his books published, but he is rather paid for his contributions. So get a historian of this subject that supports your claims. Also, while we at it, bring your evidence that you and your Nestorian brethren are related to the ancient Assyrians and that nobody else is. Let's see the evidence for that and how you or anyone can come up with that. Did you test the DNA of the ancient Assyrians and then compare it with yours and everyone of you? And what happened to all of the ancient peoples who were present, before and after Assyrians and who mixed with everyone else? Where are they now, and why only Assyrians? What happened to the Sumerians, Amorites and others? Mesopotamia, a melting pot, how did you remain pure and survive while nobody else did? How can being a Christian prove you are Assyrian when religion doesn't affect blood? --------------------- |
