That is the best way to be. Honest, kind, loving, humble, tolerant etc. I consider myself a humanist too and I love animals as well. Much can be learned from animals and I honestly believe there are animals that are much better than some humans. Saddam Hussein authored a book in which he recalled his relationship with his childhood horse and it was very touching. It is said he had a rough and lonely upbringing in which he developed an amazing relationship with his horse and a dog.

There was also a Sufi shaykh who found a burglar in his house. The thief didn't find anything useful to take and left empty handed. The Sufi couldn't find anything to give him just so the thief wouldn't leave empty handed. I also remember a few years back I lived in a very rough area and this friend of mine had his door open as he was outside. This punk stole some money from him and I knew who did it. I kept telling the man let's go get the bastard and show him but he refused and thought the thief needed it more than him. That is a good heart to have but it's hard to be that way at the same time.
