What is also kept out from the news is that Libya was always very tribal. It is a wonder that Gaddafi was able to convince Libyans to get an education and he raised literacy level to over 85%. These are tribal people who for the most part you can't convince to get an education even if you gave them cash. They are divided between tribes, clans etc and Gaddafi was able to keep it stable and peaceful. The Libyans who fought against him were mostly pro-Idris people, radicals and some of the racists who hated the fact that Gaddafi was pro-black nationalism and supporter of African unity. Gaddafi may have been light skinned from the outside but was black from the inside.
