I agree with you, but I also see it as the importance of the role the artist, the poet, the musician, the philosopher plays in society as being one who documents and analyzes the worst parts of human history, and uses his or her imagination to envision a future based on the better aspects of humanity, such as peace, love and solidarity. My personal contradiction is that, on the one hand, I'm a pessimist, and on the other, I'm sectretly hopeful that things will eventually change for the best after they change for the worst. I suspect residues of my Catholic upringing have something to do the way I view the world, even though I consider myself a secular humanist.
