>Pancho, I know you have said it many times and are maybe tired but could you just kindly tell us what would have happened to these Nestorians, who are now Assyrian, if it were not for Muslims and Arabs conquering Mesopotamia? Refresh my memory and tell us what would have happened if Byzantium would have gotten hold of that other side of Mesopotamia. Because our nationalists would like the world to believe that everything was fine before Muslims came and they like us to believe that all their problems would be solved if there were no Muslims and Islam but I believe otherwise and I think you do also, right?

No question that the Arabs saved our Nestorians and the rest from the Christian Eastern Roman empire....before Christianity the Romans killed very few Christians....as Norman would say "let´s look at the historical record"...there exist letters from Pliny the Younger to the emperor Trajan discussing what to do about these pesky Christians...Trajan replies that under no circumstances should they be hunted down but are to be left unmolested so long as they obey the laws...but if one of them makes a nuisance of himself, by going door to door and annoying people no doubt, he or she should only be asked to light a stick of incense before any shrine to the emperor...that´s all. Only if they refuse to do so should they be treated as traitors to the empire and emperor...it is only when the Romans turn Christian that the real murder of Christians begins...of HERETICAL Christians because the whole point to forcing Rome to convert was to force ONE religion on a sprawling empire which had in its clutches over 100 nations with a babel of religious sects...it was Christ who made the Romans intolerant, not paganism.

By the time Rome was Christian not only could you NOT escape death by something as simple as lighting incense but the police HUNTED you down for the sole purpose of killing you and your family, if you were deemed heretics.

In fact the Eastern Christians living in Persia only chose Nestorious, whom they had never met, as their patron to prove to their Persian overlords, now made suspicious by Rome´s adoption of Christianity, that they need not be suspected of religious loyalty to Rome because Nestorious and all his followers were now heretics worthy of death or exile in Byzantium.

Our sects were squabbling among each other even back then with each bishop in charge of a gang of thugs...people of opposing sects were attacked in the streets or pulled from their churches and torn limb from limb...there is no doubt, given their record, that the eastern Romans would have torched all our ancestors, or forced them to convert....the Arabs, respecting Jesus and his followers, forced peace on the warring factions....they could give a shit for the fine distinctions over which Christian murdered Christian...all they demanded was that these brawling sects maintain the civil peace....if not for the Arabs there would have been no Nestorians or Orthodox Syrians...they ALL would have become Greek Orthodox or else....which wouldn´t have been a bad thing for the reason the Armenians are so far ahead of us, and the Chaldeans, is because they are ONE kind of Christin...not divided up into squabbling sects.
