The same is true of Germanic languages such as English or Dutch. Our nationalists think of themselves clever by saying we speak "Assyrian" when in reality we don't. They may fool an amateur or someone ignorant but not those that know. It is also common among them to claim that the ancients didn't switch languages but only the writing system but that's a bunch of bull. Aramaic was a popular language and was adopted by many but that did not mean the people were Aramaic and speaking this language does not make the modern Nestorians equal to the ancient Assyrians. The Akkadian language was different from Aramaic and it was adopted by many people. Sure, the languages may have been similar since they are Semitic, but still not the same; unless they agree that Arabic, Ethiopic, Hebrew etc are all the same and even Arab Muslims are Assyrian as well. Their nation is built on vry thin ice but may appear thick to a fool. --------------------- |
