...my proudest moment as a teen in high school was when I was suspended for three days for thinking, literally. ..I was sitting in study hall...designed to make sure you did at least some of your homework.....I hardly ever did any...so I sat, quietly minding my own business, looking out the window at the cloud patterns, thinking about a Khalil Gibran book I was reading at home. ...the dope of a teacher asked what I was doing....I said I was thinking...he said I was supposed to do homework...I said I didn't do homework...he said I would have to go to the Dean's office if I didn't do homework....so I went and the Dean kept me there for two days and then sent me back to the study hall....I took my seat, looked out the window and went on thinking...the teacher called me to his desk and gave me a Nancy Drew mystery book, said I had to keep "busy"....I gave it a shot, for one page, then took back to him...said it was boring and I preferred to think...he sent me back to the Dean...who sat me in the office for another two days...then he sent me back...I walked into the study hall and took my seat...the teacher asked for my permission slip to return to class...I said I threw it away...he sent me back to the Dean who suspended me for three days which allowed me to stay home and finish the Gibran book....then I went back to school after three peaceful days and continued to think in study hall...end of stupid story. Apparently the school wasn't ready to storm the barricades over one teen thinking...not bothering anyone, just thinking....they tried to make it uncomfortable and embarrassing, they thought, when they were ones who should be embarrassed at what they peddle as education... --------------------- |
