There are so many different manifestations of ta'arof. The last time I was inadvertently engaged in a game of ta'arof was when I complemented an Iranian shopkeeper on his shoes. For two weeks aferward each time he saw me he tried to persuade me to accept his shoes as a gift, or to buy me an exact pair. The reason he insists, I think, is that he belives in "chemsch" or "eyna", and therefore, thinks that by my mere complement bad luck may befall him (broken leg, crushed feet), and to override the perceived eye of envy, he MUST buy me the exact same pair of shoes, or give me his. I've been avoiding him and been vigilant not to complement anymore Iranians or MidEasterners. --------------------- |
