Herebert Marcuse and the neo-Marxists of the Frankfurt School left Germany in '33, moving the institute to Geneva, then to New York. I think Hannah Arendt may have also left during the same period. But the majority of the small shop owners and working class Jews, many of whom proud Germans who served and fought in the First World War, their hopeful naivete, nor their patriotism, saved them from the slow death march to the camps and the Zyclone B gas. I used to condescendingly put down some of my right-wing friends who'd compare the blind enthusiasm towrad Obama's "hope" and "change" to the rise of Hitler.. But I now tend to agree somewhat with their comparision.. Although, I'd argue that the fascistic character of the American Empire is inherent in it's so-called democracy, and in capitalism itself, rather than the character of its individual elected leaders -- and perhaps within the collective unconscience of the American people, who consciously accept this system of naked, individualistic, competition so that one day they may become their boss's boss and consume all the unessesary gadgets they don't need.. as their motto is and has been "he with the most toys wins". But I'm a pessimist... don't listen to me. --------------------- |
