2. These people are the "indigenous" occupants of the land. Another myth easily debunked. If the Christians inhabitants who have taken on the ancient Assyrian identity are considered more indigenous than the other inhabitants then what's to stop the Kurds claiming Sumerian ancestry? The truth is that Iraq unlike the US or Australia has a short history and consistant identity unlike Iraq which has been called numerous names over the course of its 5,000 year history. We have been known as Sumerians, Akkadians, Babyloninans, Amorites, Assyrians and after the fall of the empire and the changing of religions, as Arabs and Kurds. Besides the body which we appeal to for sovereignty, the UN, defines indigenous as people who have lived in the same area for over 400 years as indigenous which makes even the newly arrived Kurds indigenous to Iraq - unlike the Europeans who now reside in northern America. --------------------- |
