It's the same pattern of imperial criminal behavior that the US and Britain have been perpetrating against the people of the Third-World. If you go back to the covert Central American wars of Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua, or the illegal South-East Asian wars of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia you can see the same Machiavallian "divide and rule" philosophy at play. The Khmer Rouge's ascent to power in Cambodia in the mid-70s was a direct result of the secret bombings of that country in the late 60s, courtesy of Nixon/Kissinger. Even after the Vietnamese drove out the Khmer, they were being supported by the US on the borders of Thailand because they were "fighting the communinsts", even though by then it was well known that over 2 million Cambodians had been murdered by the combination of the illegal US bombing campaign and the brutal restructuring of Cambodian society by Pol Pot and his men. Forty years later these South-East Asian countries are still struggling to emerge from the ashes, bombs and bones of US imperialism; just as thirty years later Central American countries are stuck in a swamp of drug and human trafficking and violence. And when a progressive grovernment comes into power, as in Manuel Zelaya's in Honduras, the US moves it's assassins in to take over in a coup. Iraq may take a hundred years to recover if left unmolested by the West.. or else it'll continue to be a corrupt, failed state just as the West bombed it into being. --------------------- |
