I just finished watching the film A Coca Cola Case on Netflix which deals with the murders of over four thousand Columbian union leaders killed by paramilitary hitmen hired by Coca Cola Co. There's a scene where one of the union advocates goes to the University of Chicago (home of Neoliberal economics guru, Milton Freidman) to make his case against Coke to the students there who are outside drinking coke and yelling "Fuck Human Rights, I want my Coke!", or as one of them explained "I have a choice to drink Coke... the union leaders had a choice not to work for Coke." You'd think that young University students are sensitive about Human Rights, people of the developing world and corporate corruption, but as Hedges explains these young students have already conformed to the corporate world and are therefore desensitized to its workings, just as they have no scruples about gang raping a developmentally challenged girl. --------------------- |
