My family, bless their hearts, would call someone Mexican, who clearly wasn't, by way of a put-down, especially of other Assyrians. Something like (translated) "look there, as if they were Mexicans"! Why, I would ask, when pointing out a slovenly Assyrian would they change his nationality? Did they mean that there could be NO slovenly Assyrians? That the minute an Assyrian dropped his shirt on the floor he changed nationalities?

It was soft racism.

Americans never stop to think what kind of European first moved to America...they were the "Puerto Ricans" of Europe. Only the poor, disenfranchised or hated came to this wild land. And only the poor, uneducated and desperate Mexicans, Puerto Ricans AND assyrians, first came to this country...all of those who had good positions and of the mid to upper classes stayed right where they were...no one else could put up with the misery and degredation that is the life of the working immigrant...so naturally white Americans believe that ALL Mexicans and Puerto Ricans are poor and ignorant etc and etc. As if there are no pig-ignorant and dirt-poor white people.

I'm guessing there are very few homeless Mexicans, Puerto Ricans or Asians in America...I'm guessing most of those are white.
