You've probably heard about or read Stephen Kinzer's "All the Shah's Men" about the CIA's million dollar coup in '53 lead by Teddy Roosvelt's grandson (or nephew?) Kermit Roosvelt. One of the main reasons for the takeover of the US embassy in '79 was that it was known as a "nest of spies" where Kermit Roosvelt waited out when his intital plan failed - one of his paid men was arrested by a supporter loyal to Mossadegh. A great follow up to that book would be John Perkin's "Confessions of An Economic Hitman" or the film "Apology of an Economic Hitman" which is on all week on LinkTV.Org. Actually, there are a great bunch of documentaries on LinkTV this month... do check em out. I've been up all night watching Link - although I took a break to watch the classic Rossellini film, "Open City" with the firey, sexy Anna Magnani, who along with Sophia Loren and Claudia Cardinale, are three of the most naturally beautiful women that Italy's gifted us. Anyway, there's a great line toward the end of the film when one of the German officers says "we've sowed the whole of Europe full of corpses and we got was hate! hate! hate!" Sound familiar? --------------------- |
