There's a documentary film which was shown on LinkTv.org a year ago regarding these operations. There was a man(now a woman) who said that Khomeini had given his approval for an operation because there is nothing in the Quran (I don't know this, never read the Quran) that mentions transexuality. My personal opinion is that the Iranians would rather push for these operations than to have open homosexuality, as Ahmadinejad said Iran has no homosexuals. Plus, there are cases of extreme depression and suicide among some of the patients, according to the film. I forget the title... check the documentary section of LinkTv.org.
