"In 1978 I was working in New York alongside an Armenian sculptor from Yerevan in the USSR. He told me this same thing one day. He said, "you Americans are the brainwashed ones...we KNOW our government lies to us constantly while you people actually BELIEVE all you are told". -- "in whats nowadays called a totalitarian state/military state or something, it's easy you just hold a bludgeon over their heads and if they get out of line you just smash them over the head, but as societies become more free and democratic you lose that capacity and therefore you have to turn to the techniques of propaganda." ~Noam Chomsky~ -- I've also heard similar things from Hayastancis about Soviet Armenia. The Armenians I've met in their 50s and 60s tend to miss the old days when healthcare and education were free and there was affordable housing and guaranteed employment (at least that's what I was told). An Ethiopian taxi driver shared similar sentiments. He had graduated from Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow and like others of his generation living in the Socialist Bloc, he was made to believe that Western freedom was to be added to the established human rights of universal education, healthcare, and so on. Personally, I think the social democracies of Western European nations in the 1960s and '70s had it best: a mix of capitalism and socialism. But that all ended with the collapse of the Soviet Union. There was no need to try to lure people away from socialism. Now there is no alternative. It's eat or get eaten. An old American artist who fought in World War II was saying that he remembers when things were different... and much more humane. Unfortunately, those born in the late '80s have no concept of how things were in the '60s and '70s. For them "greed is good" and stepping on someone else is the norm. Sad. --------------------- |
