I absolutely agree, Allen keeps the viewer engaged and is possibley the only filmmaker that I know who has prolifically created such a body of work by focussing on human relations. And, as you mentioned, Woody's a Jazz musician who's played every Monday night at the same club in NY for years. He's simply incredible... He is the best American (and international) filmmaker. And for a "drop out" like myself, it gives me motivation and hope (not that I'm comparing myself with Allen). Coppola made "The Godfather", "The Godfather II", "The Conversation", and "Apocalypse Now", then he wernt broke and had to make "The Godfather III" (a mistake, in my opinion) hoping to pay back his debts. "The Godfather I and II" are masterful. I keep going back to them. Some say it's about family, or the Mafia, or Italian-Americans, I think it's all of that and more. Coppola said it was about a King (Don Corleone) and the three facets of his personality brought to life through his three sons: the violence, through "Sonny"; the dumb and sweet, through "Fredo"; and the cold and cunning, through "Michael". I see it as the birth of American hegemony, as the film begins in New York and by the second film, the family has moved west and is making plans to expand its power by taking over the business interests (gambling, entertainment)in Cuba. To me, it's a bit like the birth of the 13 US Colonies; the Westward Expansion; and then the move to take over Cuba and the Phillipines. Of course, this sounds a bit simplistic, but if you watch the two films again, you may also find these parallels. Just an opinion of mine no one seems to agree with... --------------------- |
