I immediately thought of Pancho when I read this. Bart Ehrman says the same exact thing in his book and so does Robert Eisenman. Bart Ehrman says that Christians were not hiding and practiced their faith openly. There were instances were angry pagans attacked Christians and it usually because they were blamed for bringing bad luck or they weren't being good citizens, but it wasn't really the government who was sponsoring these acts. On the other hand, we know from history that Christians became oppressors as soon as they gained power with the conversion of Constantine. This is when persecution took place and pagans were tortured, killed and forcefully converted. Temples were burned or converted to churches, priests were jailed and tortured and their religions were banned. The Romans didn't ban Christianity, it was the other way around. It was the Romans who helped Christianity flourish while there were Jewish groups who were persecuted. Even Paul, the founder of Christianity, was one of those who persecuted Jewish sects and the actual followers of Jesus never liked him and even tried to kill him and he had to be saved by Roman soldiers.

Christians like to paint this image that they have always been persecuted for their religion and always been victims when in reality they were the persecutors. Even today it is Christians who own and make weapons, and sell the most.
