We lived in Kuwait in the 50s, a time when they still had household slaves...but any American worker would have loved to trade places with them....they were given all the old Cadillacs, limousines as well, when the Sheikhs got tired of them, usually after only one year...all the slave had to do was change the license plate, they had all their needs met and were taken care of all their days...and whenever a son or daughter was born to a Sheikh, at around the same time there was always a slave child of the same sex being born...the child of the Sheikh was "given" the slave child in a special relationship...they always became the best of friends, growing up together...there were class distinctions later of course, but it was a unique relationship and I remember that if the Shiekh's son ever struck his slave, he was punished in return.....that all ended in 1958 but there wasn't a slave who left his masters household.

There were of course no new slaves...just the offspring of slaves from way back when who'd remained in the family.
