You mention people, or "Americans", as you say, who never travel abroad. I live on the west side of L.A. and I know numerous people who live 15 min.s away from me in the San Fernando Valley who never leave the Valley. They don't even go from the West Valley to the East Valley. Shit, they don't even leave their homes. When I tell them where I live, they treat me as if I'm from some far and foreign land. It's too bad, because I always thought of Americans, or the American spirit, as adventurous. Just think about the frontiers people who'd pack up their family and move Westward to get a piece of land, facing the unknown, and many of them either starved to death or were killed battling Indians. Consumerism has really fucked us all up. Even immigrants who live here for several years become domesticated, concerning themselves not with what new exhibition they can see for free at the museum, but how much shit made in China they can buy on sale at Walmart. Then they have their own exhibitions at home, showing off their new toys and gadgets to freinds, and patting themselves on the back for getting them on sale. It's a real mind-numbing process. No wonder after the attacks on New York G.W. told us all to go shopping.
