Fortuantely, like many Assyrians of my father's generation, he was a boxer and taught me early on how to protect myself. When I came to the US (San Jose) at the end of '79, we were groomed to think that as Christians we were to be welcomed with open arms. That was not the case for me, or any of the Assyrians I went to school with in San Jose. There was no ESL program and some of the teachers were as racist as the students. So, as a result, we simply didn't go to class and hung out together in the soccer field palying "goal koochik" little goal football. Now, in LA, I hear these awful stories about how some of the Iranians are being treated in school. They're afraid to say anything to protect their own dignity. So, they do what other minorities had had to do when faced with overwhelming hatred, they become self-hating individuals and participate in their own belittlement. It's a shame. And the extreme reaction to that, is a small group who'll form a gang and violently answer back. And then they'll be labeled as terrorsts, and that will justify all the acts of racism perpetrated against the entire group. --------------------- |
