Dear Jumblat, I think I see why you are getting upset. You think that he's saying that Assyrians don't exist BUT what he in fact is stating, and this is taken from Dr John Joseph, is that modern Assyrians do in fact exist BUT they aren't the lineal descendants of the ancient Assyrians. Which in any ordinary society would be no big deal BUT our people whose identity is church based are correct in seeing this as a challenge especially since they've been so quick to discredit another one of our identities - the Chaldean - that has no lineal descent. Both the Assyrians and Chaldeans can historically only trace their descendants as far back as the Aramaens. Add the fact that the Chaldean identity began during the 16th century whereas ours began in 19th century and it starts to become plainly obvious why we fear John Joseph's book. We then have the indigenous issue to deal with. This issue is used by us to somehow claim that we are more entitled to an Assyrian triangle in Iraq than are the other descendants of the ancient Assyrians and Babylonians, the Sunni, Shiite, Kurds etc. However according to the UN which is the world body that will decide on a homeland, people are considered indigenous if they have lioved on the same piece of land for over 400 years. That makes even the Kurds. indigenous to Iraq. But I don't think we should have an insecurity complex over this issue. We should see this as an opportunity to embrace all the preceeding civilisations who influenced our people in Beth Nahrain each in turn bestowing their own unique legacy on our culture. And should you wish to identify with just one of Beth Nahrain's ancient ancestors then you should feel free to do so provided you act the part. --------------------- |
