These comments are so typical of the A.P. news site (it's A.P. right? Sounds like it). When I got "off the boat" in the "land of the free", I thought being Assyrian and having my Christian Crucifix around my neck would save me from daily attacks at school in San Jose. Wrong... Not only were the kids against me, but even some of the adults(teachers and faculty)disliked me -- especially when I started to defend myself. Thanks to my late father's boxing skills, if someone threw a jab, I'd throw back a combination. It took three schoolyard fights for me to finally be left alone. But it didn't stop the same kids from tormenting, ganging up on and beating other kids, not only from Iran or Iraq, but Jews, Blacks and Latinos. Once again, thanks to my pops for moving us out of San Jose and to L.A., where my friends were Jews, Muslims, Blacks, Latinos (and Whites) with the only difference being -- not one of race or ethnicity -- but of socio/economic strata (class).

Three weeks ago, my mom told me that an Iranian kid (a friend's son) was walking with his white girlfriend somewhere in Denver. Two white football player types attempted to assault her and when he (a fairly fragile, little guy) came to her aid, they beat him to a pulp. I think he's still in the hospital.

I stayed in Portland in '94 and I can tell you firsthand that they have several, well-organised and violent White Power Skinhead gangs. And these guys don't even like liberal whites, so just imagine their outlook on someone like me... or you.
