When I was a kid in Tehran, there was relative of ours whom I'd call 'Khalu George' and each time he had a different story about America. I'd always be waiting in anticipation of the next Khalu story (in my 7yr old mind, Khalu had been to America many times, sometimes, I'd think he'd just arrived from the shores of New York). I still remember how he'd say that the streets are paved with gold and everyone is "rich and free!" He used to bring me "Tin Tin" books (although "Tin Tin" is European) but I'd always imagined myself as Tin Tin with his little dog and his friend, the Captian, on some adventure in my fantasies of America. Well, it didn't take long to realise that the old man's stories and the realities I faced growing up in America wrere quite contradictory. And, one day, as I was watching some old American film (it may have been one of Frank Capra's optimistic movies), I realised that the story was almost exactly like the one of the stories that Khalu had told me. So I asked my aunt one day about Khalu George and his American adventures, and she replied: " Ay, Baba, the only adventure Khalu had was leaving Urmia for Tehran." I guess the old man and I had one peculiar thing in common: we both imagined ourseleves in some fictional America. --------------------- |
