And not only is Islam younger but I also don't think it has been as bad as Christianity. Sure, it has had wars and backwardness but some of the backwardness can be directed at Christians and the west. Indonesia and Pakistan have both had women presidents, something the US hasn't even had. We see in history where former slaves turn out to become caliphs and amirs. Of course the religion will always limit potential for anyone in the islamic world but Muslims have proven they're not all radically or oppressive and backwards. Keep in mind that it was Muslims like the sheikh of Dagestan who banned salafis from his country. Salafis are avoided and rejected in much of the Islamic world and it's why they prey on western converts because people in the east already know they're full of shit.

The west has influenced the middle east and other Muslim countries directly and indirectly in every way during the last 200 years. In most recent cases such as Syria, Libya and Iraq, these countries were secular and with social programs and now these same countries are dominated by western backed militants and radical Muslims. I hate to even use terms such as "radical" and "moderate" because I see this as product of US propaganda. US foreign policy has proven that it will rather have backwards religious fanatics in charge than someone secular and leftist. Radicals are more intimidating to western audience, hence, better for weapons sales. They also hinder elections as they're against democratic elections. I believe the west is guilty of what goes on in Islamic world and has stopped modernizing and progress in every way.

Muslims have found a way to incorporate Islam with their own respective cultures and western life. I remember visiting Iraq in 1990 and would see women dressed like in western countries and nobody bothered them. I think it will take effort from Muslims and the US has to stay out of their business and see what Muslims can do. There are millions of Muslims immigrants living in the west and I don't think they would live here if they were as backwards as Harris, Maher and rest seem to think.
