...ah yes....Santana! I never knew these guys because my car radio broke in 1974 and never had another for 35 years...I've never bought a record in my life till a couple of years ago....certain music as we all know is very suitable for certain occasions and though I liked Santana well enough before, last year I REALLY learned to appreciate him.

...Mexicans are wonderful people...and I love the country and want to be cooked and eaten there when I die ( I refuse to "pass", that's for farts)....but one of the things that bothers me no end is the respect Mexicans have for other people's whims and ways...especially where music is concerned...a guy will blast his radio at six in the morning because that's when he wants to hear it...it won't cross his mind that this is inconsiderate to all his neighbors who are sleeping...and they would consider it rude to point out HIS rudeness and lack of consideration.

I happen to be very sensitive to music noise especially the Mexican equivalent of Country Western, where our hero is heartbroken for Guadalupe, who left him on account of he was found to be banging her mother, father and twin sister...regardless, our hero is truly distraught at her unkindness and twangs for fifteen minutes telling Lupe how she broke his heart and shouldn't take things too seriously...and not just one song like that but ten...in a row.

My next door neighbor in the abandoned mining town where I live is just such a fellow and, worse, he is an aspiring musician himself who plays, of all detestable instruments, an accordion, which sounds like nothing more than a burnt cat going through detox....especially when the guy's aspirations have a long way to go...and worse yet, he lives with three other guys who must have visions of a band, they listen so much and try so hard.

I went over a few times and suggested they turn the sound down so only they could enjoy it...they looked at me like I had three heads...I don't think the concept even entered their heads.

So, I got a stereo and thought I'd play my own music, at least some that I liked, to just drown out their own...but then we were both playing loud music all day and it was worse...so I went out and bought two huge speakers and set them up in the backyard facing the neighbor's house...now, these guys support themselves by manufacturing iron gates and things like that...they have a huge yard and as these things go, their working area is at the far end of the yard, away from their house and the open window they set their radio on....I never mind the sound of their tools...but when they work in the yard and crank the noise up to reach them 75 yards away, AND be heard over the power tools, it becomes hell.

With my new speakers, and my two old ones, all hooked up, I searched through collections of friends and found a best of Santana and of BB King...and I turned that sucker up FULL BLAST till my walls were shaking and cats left town....I drowned them out alright and I don;t think they cared for either musician....I would play until I heard them stop, and then I'd stop, or turn it way down...but that wasn't so good because they'd start up again after 20 minutes of silence...and their jam sessions, always late at night, meant I had to stay up too, and couldn't read in bed.

Then I hit on it....if ONCE they turned their music on and up, I started Santana, especially the one with all the drums...and played it for HOURS, regardless of whether they stopped or not...I even found I liked loud music, so long as it was music I LIKED...I put in earplugs and cranked my speakers to maximum...the speakers would walk across the floor the vibrations were so powerful....and that solved the problem.

They couldn't get angry because I too showed I enjoyed music, especially LOUD music, like they liked...I kept hoping one of them would sheepishly come over and ask me to turn it down, por favor...but they didn't, or wouldn't. But they learned...they played music but for themselves, and when they worked in the yard they didn;t turn it on any more...and there was peace. They kept it down for fear I'd turn mine on, WAY on!

I've been gone a few months and I'm sure they're back to their old tricks...I was warned, by assyrians, not to do such "dangerous" things because I might get myself killed, or kidnapped...but that's assyrians for you.
