I am not near a computer right now so I can't bring any quotes from the books or anything but I can touch a little on the jizya issue from work. It is true that non-muslims living under islam had to pay a tax which is called jizya but this was not a punishment or a burden. Muslims have to pay zakat, which is similar to charity and goes toward the poorer. Both men and women have to pay zakat if they have a certain amount of wealth saved. Non-muslims don't pay zakat but they payed a jizya which was only taken from the men of military ages and only those who could afford it. Women, priests, poor, blind, etc were all exempt from that. This jizya guaranteed them rights and services. There were cases where jews and christian individuals thought it was unfair to let muslims do all the fighting while they could be at home and safe so some of them volunteered to fight in the army and they didn't pay jizya. One year during the crusade period, the caliph offered the jizya money back because he was afraid he mey not be able to protect them, and the minorities did not want the jizya money back. They offered their jizya and blessings to the muslims. I will bring my evidence later when I get home. --------------------- |
