Although we're not getting into the "driverless" territory by what I'm about to share, just two days ago a friend told me about a new feature that his new car has. If he's about to rear-end somebody, the car brakes aggressively on the driver's behalf. He's a very cautious driver, but he told me that the other day somebody swerved in front of him and, indeed, it happened so quickly that had the car not hit the brakes, he surely would have hit the car in front of him. So, there's a fine line between more and more advanced (and valid) safety features and a driverless car. I told my friend when he recounted this story to me: "Ralph Nader would be proud of this car's safety features". pancho wrote: >...what was the social urgency of a car that drives itself? It can't be about saving lives...industry doesn't work that way. It has to be what it always is; making money with some new technology because the old ones are petering out. At last year's annual Apple roll-out of new products all they had to offer was a watchband.... > >Driverless cars offer a whole new ride-to-the-bank for tech companies...not just the cars but all those gadgets they can sell you to while away the hours you sit in your car hoping all goes well....and not just with your car but all the others zooming past you. > >It's a dumb idea....car manufacturers are recalling millions of cars for simple things like keys and transmissions and brakes and now they want to add a computer driver? really? All other problems with car manufacture were solved so we can play around with this ditzy idea? --------------------- |
