I'll take a standard/stick shift "old car" any day over a robotic auto-mobile. Coming from a long line of Assyrian "camion" (truck) drivers, a clutch and a stick is so much more easier to control a car, than it is with a computer like HAL-9000 (which like Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey") has a mind of its own. I miss driving through the canyons in L.A., like Topanga Canyon or Coldwater Canyon, double-clutching, down-shifting, etc., which almost resembles an art form, or a beautiful balletic dance. Damn, I miss them old cars. I miss watching my late father change shifts... without even using the clutch... by reaching a certain speed in between shifts; instead, tapping the accelerator at the right speed, to up-shift from 2 to 3, for instance, without a grinding sound fucking up the gear box. --------------------- |
