The other night, I saw film from Iran titled, "Day Break", about capital punishment under Sharia. What's interesting is that in murder cases, the victim's family (at least in Iran) are the deciding factor whether the convicted murderer is to be hanged to death, to the last detail of pulling the trolley from under him. If the family is not present, the execution is posponed. Once they show up, a mullah lectures them on their right to execute, but also emphasizes the importance of forgiveness. If they forgive the convict, he gets to live. The prisoner then is taken off death row, but continues to serve his time. Once the mullah believes that he has been rehabilitated, he's released into society. If we had the same system here, I wonder if Troy Davis would still be alive.
