These days the prevalent Evangelical brand is no more than the anti-thesis to critical thinking. There was a time when the Christian Left had champions of justice and the poor in figures like Phillip and Dan Berrigan, or the many revolutionary nuns and priests in Central and Latin America who were the proponents of Liberation Theology, of which Archbishop Oscar Romero of El Salvador was most renowned, but mainly painted as a pro-communist, and whom the late Pope John Paul II was reluctant to beatify, although he had no problem in the beatification of the Croatian Nazi collaborator, Archbishop Stepinac. --------------------- |
