...for most of human history there were no nations....city-states and then empires...and religion was the determining factor. It's only recently that a nation can be made up of people of different religions...relatively recently....but when Assyria was Assyria, to be an actual Assyrian, and not just living in the Assyrian empire..you had to believe in Ashur.

...our boys gave up on Ashur long ago...back when your god determined what passed for nationality...that's the reason the name of the God is the first part of the name of your religion...as in MUHHAMAD-ism...and YAHW-ism...and CHRIST-ianity and BUDDAH-ism and ZOROASTOR-ism.

..these days you can be Christian and be of any nation...and you can be of any nation and be Christian, even Israel. But not when there as an Assyria and there were actual Assyrians.
