...you can defeat someone's army...but you can't beat people who are defending their homes and families...the Nazis couldn't do it either...they beat armies but when they occupied: they lost. That's because the people have nowhere to run to...they can't "withdraw", and their backs are against the wall....and, of course, an occupying army commits atrocities against the people and that pisses them off....the longer they occupy, the more atrocities and so, the more recruits for the people...you never win an occupation, not unless you're prepared to enslave the population and take over.
