The nationalists thought to be clever by making the two names the same so it will appear they were always Assyrians and that all of the syriac Christians were calling themselves Assyrian. We wouldn't even be having this conversation if the modern Assyrians weren't recently invented. But they are around now for the last 100 years or so, therefore, it becomes necessary to touch on this and clarify. The two names sound similar but that don't mean they're the same. Even in our language there is a clear difference between the two. Surya and Atur or different and so is Ashur. Surya, Syria, and Suraya for a person from there. Suraya is the same as Aramean. Someone else recently tried to play this game with me and I broke his party up real quick. --------------------- |
