My simple definition for art is shaping order out of chaos using one's optimal set of skills. I also agree that talent is "caring" or passion. What I've always found boring is modern art, or the idea of content without form. Form is what conveys content, and the better one's technique, or set of skills, the more universal the content, or theme, is conveyed. I have a musical ear and a photographic eye, but I'm neither a musician nor a photographer, though I'm more of a photographer than a musician since I put in the time to study black & white photography, from taking the picture, to developing the film, and printing the image on paper. But I never studied music, yet I have the talent to pick up and intuitively learn numerous instruments, like drums, hand drums, guitar, bass guitar, piano, and a few other instruments, but since I cannot read music, I am not a musician. I know people, wannabe artists, who skip the hard part of learning the necessary skills, and they produce crap and call it modern art, or call it avante-garde (bullshit)! The only type of avante-garde I can accept is when someone like the late, great Jazz bassist and composer, Charles Mingus, who had classical musical training and decided to produce avante-garde Jazz, knowing exactly what note to play and where, unlike the fake musicians who lack the classical training and make a bunch of noise and call it modern or avante-garde. The same applies to cinema, painting, poetry, and other types of art. Without skill, talent is meaningless. --------------------- |
