I remember a few years ago there was an incident in Iraq where a group of Muslim "militants" attacked a police station and they were caught later and turned out to be American or British. It has happened and it's very possible. Some or many of the mercenaries are US special forces and Isis shows that it has definitely has that type of training. Even though the modern Iraqi army is weak compared to the old days, Isis hasn't taken over too easy. They haven't been able to handle Syria as easily because it has a better military than Iraq but they're taking Iraq too easy.
