There's too much money to be made in production, transportation, sales, law enforcement, drug-rehab, etc., for there to be any positive reforms in the "War on Drugs". This war, like the one on terror, is an endless war on the poor and the defenseless, to further impoverish, disenfranchise and enslave them to a system of indefinite profits for a few. In the '90s I remember talking about this with my professor, who at the time was disdained by a Right wing meathead in our class, because he had taken on a case defending a young Black kid who was looking at 25+ years inside. The kid had two previous strikes - both for possession, I think - and he was caught again, this time for a small amount of crack (somewhere between a quarter to half a gram). The law stated then that any amount of crack cocaine was a felony. Crack is made of powder cocaine, baking soda, water, and heat. It's a cheap drug, making it affordable to almost anyone, especially the poor who live in the urban ghetto. Powder cocaine is mostly consumed by the wealthy. When it hit the social scene in the '70s, it was rich doctors, lawyers, celebrities, politicians, and the like, who bought and used it, normally snorting it up their nostrils with a rolled-up hundred-dollar bill (nothing less than a straw made out of a $100-bill sufficed). The law was so biased that a White man with two grams of powder cocaine got a slap on the wrist, but a young Black kid with a rock weighing less than a gram got a felony, a strike and was barred from voting. --------------------- |
